Task Stages

Task Stages Learning, Teaching and Assessment Principles
Pre-task: Pupils should discuss what people associate with various colours.
Leading questions for this discussion could be:
  • Is there any one colour that everybody likes/hates?
  • Why do some people wear certain colours?
  • When you think of certain people, can you think of a colour that matches their character?
  • What colours do people usually paint their walls? Why?
  • Do colours mean certain things?
  • Why do uniforms have certain colours?
  • What things do colours tell us? (traffic lights, flags, mourning, wedding)
  • Can you imagine a world without colour? (colour blind)
  • The task encourages divergent thinking.
  • Pupils build on their prior language and world knowledge.
  • The materials are appropriate to the pupils' interests, experiences and knowledge.
Pupils will be offered several online games and quizzes through which they can practice writing the colour words.
  • Pupils develop confidence in their ability to use the target language.
Pupils will surf to sites to read about the meaning of colours for people in different countries. They will find specific information at these sites to answer questions about the connection between colours and culture.
  • Teacher takes the pupils' level of cognitive and linguistic development into account.
  • Pupils have opportunities to learn by doing.
  • Teacher encourages the development of a positive self-image by providing success oriented tasks and positive feedback.
Pupils will be asked to choose a colour they like most of all. Pupils will fill out a form about the favourite colour they voted for. They will be asked to think about the colour they chose and choose items for that colour. The categories on the form are: colour, feeling, song and food.
Pupils will submit their choices to a "my favourite colour" gallery on the web, where they can then read what other pupils wrote.
  • Pupils analyse and reflect on their learning.
  • Teacher provides opportunities for peer interaction.
  • Pupils develop confidence in their ability to use the target language.
