Pupils will read and learn idioms that use different colours.
Task Description Pupils will learn about idioms.
Pupils will get to know colour idioms for different colours. They will play an idiom quiz and match colours to their idioms. Advanced pupils may search the Web for colour idioms and submit them to the site.
Assessment Pupils will get immediate feedback in the colour idiom quiz, telling them if they are right or wrong.

Pre-task: You may find it necessary to conduct a discussion in class about idioms before beginning this activity. You can give the pupils some examples of idioms in English and ask them to think of idioms they know in their native language.
  • Pupils build on prior knowledge and world knowledge.
Pupils will read an explanation of what an idiom is.
Pupils will read an example of a colour idiom.Then they will click on colours and see examples of colour idioms for each colour. If they click on the idioms themselves, they will get an explanation for each one in Hebrew.
  • Pupils build on prior knowledge and world knowledge.
  • Teachers create a language-rich environment.
Pupils will do a fill-in exercise where they need to match colours to the colour idioms. When they have completed the exercise successfully, they will get positive feedback.

Optional task for advanced pupils or native speakers:
Pupils can find additional colour idioms on suggested sites and submit them to a "colour idiom gallery" on the Making Waves site.
  • Pupils have opportunities to develop independent reading habits.
