Task Stages

Task Stages Learning, Teaching and Assessment Principles
Pre-task: Pupils should learn what a chain story is. They should learn that they can take part in creating an original story together with other pupils. Pupils should be encouraged to add on to what other pupils wrote.
To introduce the concept of the chain story, you can play a "blind" chain story game with the pupils. In this game each pupil writes one sentence on the top of a page and passes the page on to the next pupil. The second pupil writes a second sentence that continues the first sentence and then folds the paper in such a way that the first sentence is hidden. The second pupil passes the page to a third pupil, who adds a third sentence and then folds the page so that the second sentence is hidden etc. When the page has completed the round (or when there is no more space on it), the pupils can open the pages and read the stories that resulted. The results are usually quite funny.
  • Pupils develop literacy skills in their first language.
  • Pupils are motivated and are willing to invest the effort and persistence needed for foreign language learning.
  • Pupils interact, share information, exchange ideas and opinions and work together.
  • Create a supportive environment, one that allows pupils to take risks, to make errors and experiment with the language.
Pupils will begin by matching colour idioms to sentences that describe characters from Jasmine's story. This activity will help prepare pupils for the writing task ahead.
  • Pupils have opportunities to learn by doing.
Pupils will read a paragraph about Jasmine.
Pupils will decide if they will continue this paragraph, or continue something that another pupil wrote. Writing will be truly collaborative if the pupils read what other pupils wrote and respond to them and not simply write their own stories.
  • Teachers provide opportunities for peer interaction.
  • Task generates a variety of outcomes.
Writing rules:
  • Pupils must choose a colour idiom and use it in their writing.
  • The story should continue the previous section.
  • Pupils should not use offensive or improper language.
  • When they finish writing, pupils should check what they wrote before they fill in their personal details and publish their story on the site.
  • Pupils have opportunities for using the target language.
  • Pupils are encouraged to experiment with their growing control of the language and not be afraid to make errors.
  • Teacher encourages pupil autonomy.
  • Teacher allows pupils to make choices.
  • The task encourages divergent thinking.
