Making Waves Teacher's Guide
"Assessment is viewed as an integral part of the teaching - learning process. It involves collecting evidence of learning over a period of time, using a variety of assessment tools. The goals of assessment are to provide feedback on the on-going progress and the end-product in achieving the standards." From Principles and Standards for Learning English, English Inspectorate, Ministry of Education, 1998. The goal of assessment in these units is to provide the pupil and the teacher with feedback on the pupil's progress in achieving language learning goals and Internet skills. Assessment in Making Waves is both formative and summative and takes place at various stages of the units. There is a self-assessment tool both at the end of each fairy tale unit (the "Check!" section) and also at the end of some of the tasks in the units. Top What kinds of assessment tools are used in Making Waves? The assessment tools take the form of personal checklists, self-assessment rubrics or open-ended questionnaires. Top When should teachers talk about the assessment with their pupils? Teachers should discuss assessment with their pupils before starting the unit. This way the pupils will know more about what they are expected to achieve by the end of the unit. Pupils should be encouraged to view the assessment pages before starting the first task of the unit. Top In what language is the assessment done? The assessment tools may be used in English or in the pupils' mother tongue (Hebrew or Arabic). The idea is to enable all the pupils, including those who may find the language of the checklists or rubrics difficult, to be active in assessing their own achievements. top How do the pupils submit their assessment cards? 1.The pupils check the relevant items on the checklist or rubric, or answer the questions on the questionnaire. 2.The pupils then fill in a form with their details (name, grade, school, city). 3.They click the "submit" button in order to view their assessment card. Top How can the pupils view their assessment cards? Once they click the "submit" button on the "Check!" Page, the pupils can view their assessment cards. These include their personal details, a list of "Things I can do" and a list of "Things I want to learn more about", that the pupils are invited to fill in by themselves (in English, Arabic, or Hebrew). Top How do the pupils print their assessment cards? Pupils may print their assessment cards by clicking the "print" button at the bottom of the assessment card. It is recommended that pupils show the printed sheets to the teachers and keep them for further reference. Top Where can teachers read more about assessment? Teachers can read more about assessment according to the curriculum at http://www.etni.org.il/ministry/curriculum/section3.htm Top Teacher's Guide links: |
