Task Stages

Task Stages Learning, Teaching and Assessment Principles
Pre-task: Pupils will have to have practiced and been exposed to the number words from one to twelve prior to attempting the task. Some pupils will have difficulty in mastering the decoding and production of the difficult number words (e.g. "one", "eight"), and may need repetitive instruction.
  • Pupils build on prior language and word knowledge.
Pre-task: Pupils will need to be able to tell the time on an analog clock in their first language. Arabic speaking pupils will also need to learn the English numerals. Pupils can use the following site to practice reading the clock: http://www.teachingtime.co.uk/clock2/clockwordsres.html Some pupils may have difficulties with the concept of clock movement (clockwise and anti-clockwise), and may be helped with demonstration.
  • Pupils use language as a means for gaining information in other areas.
Pre-task: Pupils will need certain basic computer skills such as how to enter an Internet site, and how to use the mouse to drag and drop items on a screen. Mouse skills can be developed with the help of the "Mousemaster" site: http://www.clta.on.ca/hillsofmexico/mm/hommm00.htm
  • The task stimulates pupils to seek further information.
Pupils will drag words to appropriate places on the screen clock. If the word is in the correct place the pupils will get immediate positive feedback.
  • Pupils feel they are making progress. Pupils are not afraid to make errors.
  • Pupils have a success-oriented task with positive feedback.
  • The activity is a task-based activity.
To assess production ability of the number words (beyond passive recognition) pupils may be asked to complete a simple fill-in exercise, in which they type in the words they learned.
  • Pupils develop literacy skills in their first language.
  • Pupils develop confidence in their ability to use the target language.
  • Pupils have opportunities to learn by doing.
