Making Waves Teacher's Guide

Story Teaching Tips:
The fairy tales module introduces the pupils to four tales - Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood,
Aladdin, and Jack and the Beanstalk.
These tales were chosen because of their familiarity to children in their native language.
The tales should be dealt with in the classroom before taking the pupils to the computer room
in order to make the learning meaningful.

Here are some tips for teaching the stories:
    In the classroom:
  • Introduce the concept of fairy tales. Discuss various tales in pupils' cultures.
  • Familiarize pupils with key words and lexical items from the unit connected to the tale and to the content theme.
  • Read the tale to the pupils in English or in their native language.
  • Ask the pupils if they know another version of the story. Allow them to discuss the similarities and the differences.
  • Discuss and note down the key events in the story and identify any significant elements of setting and physical characteristics of the main characters.
  • Allow pupils to role-play scenes from the tale.
  • Allow pupils to prepare posters of scenes from the tale.
  • Ask pupils what they like or dislike in the story.
  • Ask them if this story reminds them of something in their lives

In the computer room:

1. First read the general Making Waves teaching tips.

2. If pupils use Peedy and have stories read out loud to them,
make sure the computers are equipped with earphones.
This will avoid excess noise in the computer room.

3. If the pupils are reading a story on the screen, prepare a simple worksheet to go with it.
This could include a very simple task such as asking pupils to
write a list of new words they have learnt (see attached work sheet template).
