Stages for achieving the desired outcome:
  • Pupils will learn to understand and describe animal body language.

  • Pupils will learn to read and understand various road signs.

  • Pupils will learn the American Sign Language alphabet and animal signs.

  • Pupils will write a story based on a picture they chose, with the help of the signs they learnt.
Task Stages

Task Number Task Name Desired Task Outcome Time Needed Task Description
1 Animal signs Pupils will be able to understand animals' body language, and describe animals' feelings. 1 lesson Pupils will see pictures of animal body language. They will complete short sentences that describe the animal's feeling. When they click on the correct answer, they will be able to read a short explanation of the animal's behaviour.
2 Road signs Pupils will be able to understand various common road signs. 1 lesson Pupils will match pictures of road signs and a list of short descriptions. They will test their knowledge by reading descriptions and choosing the correct sign.
3 Sign Language Pupils will learn about American Sign Language. They will be able to read several animal signs, and sign their own names. 1-2 In this task, pupils will learn the signs for several animals in ASL through a simple multiple-choice game. They will then learn the ASL alphabet and will be asked to type and sign their names in ASL.
4 Writing with Signs Pupils will write a story based on a picture they chose, with the help of signs. 1-2 Pupils will see several pictures that describe various situations. They will choose one picture and write a short story about that picture. In their writing they will be able to combine words and signs. They will then submit their story to a story gallery. Pupils will read other pupil's stories, and narrate them to their classmates.

Assessment
At the end of the unit, pupils will be asked to complete a checklist of the things they learnt in the unit (see the Check section).
