Learning, Teaching and Assessment Principles |
Pre-task:
- Road signs help children learn to recognize important symbols that are connected with road safety. Children can learn to read road signs as a special language that tells them what to do, and what to watch out for.
- In class, the teacher can ask pupils to describe some of the outdoor signs they see on their way to school.
- Pupils can draw signs and write their descriptions.
- They may think about the visual meaning of the signs, and about what their shapes and colours convey.
- To help prepare pupils for the online task, the teacher should review the following vocabulary: stop, do not enter, turn, right, left, parking, disabled, crossing, train, animals, telephone.
|
- Pupils build on their prior language and world knowledge.
- Pupils use the language as a means for gaining information in other areas.
- Pupils interact, share information, exchange ideas and opinions and work together.
|
In the computer room:
Pupils will see two lists: A list of road signs, and a list of short descriptions of these signs. Pupils will have to match the pictures to the correct description. |
- Pupils can see the usefulness of what they are learning.
- The materials expand pupils' world knowledge by exposing pupils to relevant and current events.
|
| After they have learnt all the road signs, pupils may do a simple quiz to test their knowledge. In this quiz, they will need to read a description and choose the correct sign. They will get only one chance to choose the correct answer. After they have finished the quiz, they can click on the "Try Again" button, and try to improve their score. |
- Pupils take responsibility for their own language learning.
- Pupils feel that they are making progress.
