Task Stages

Task Stages Learning, Teaching and Assessment Principles
Pre-task:
Discuss the subject of questionnaires and surveys. Ask pupils what types of surveys they know (i.e. election surveys, advertising surveys). Ask pupils if they have ever participated in a survey.
  • Pupils interact, share information, exchange ideas and opinions, and work together.
  • Materials are appropriate to the pupils' interests, experiences and knowledge.
  • Materials provide opportunities for meaningful communication.
The Pet Survey:
  1. Pupils will read a list of six survey topics about pets. Most of the vocabulary in these questions has already appeared in Task 1, but pupils might need to use the online dictionary in order to read all the questions.
  2. Pupils will divide into groups of six. If there are not enough pupils they may divide into groups of four or five as well.
  3. Each pupil in the group will choose one topic. Make sure that no two pupils choose the same topic in the same group.
  4. Pupils will print the survey form for their topic.
  5. Each pupil will survey the other five pupils in his/her group. Make sure that pupils do not survey pupils outside of their group. (This way no pupil will be surveyed twice.) Try to encourage pupils to ask and answer the questions in English!
  6. If a large number of your pupils do not have pets you can decide that the survey will include pets they have had in the past as well. Other options are taking into account friends' or neighbours' pets as well.
  • Pupils have maximum exposure to the target language and opportunities for using it.
  • Pupils are allowed to make choices.
  • Pupils use the language as a means for gaining information in other areas.
  • Pupils interact, share information, exchange ideas and opinions, and work together.
  • Teachers provide opportunities for peer interaction.
  • Teachers incorporate task-based activities.
Pupils will collate the results of the survey using the survey form they printed. In Task 3, the pupils will be asked to enter the results into Making Waves.
