| Desired Outcome |
By the end of the unit, pupils will be able to express their feelings about endangered animals, and think of ways to help them. |
Stages for achieving the desired outcome:
- The teacher should discuss the concepts of expressing feelings and empathy for people or animals. Pupils will read the tale, "Yako in the Jungle". Pupils will pretend to be one of the characters from the tale and write sentences expressing the feelings of that character.
- Pupils will complete a series of activities that will introduce and teach the needed vocabulary for searching endangered animals websites. This will include animal families, animal habitats and information about the dangers facing some animals.
- Pupils will browse the Making Waves Endangered Animals website and read about various endangered animals. They will then choose one animal and write a report about it, expressing their feelings toward that animal and presenting information about it.
- Pupils will suggest ideas for helping to save an animal. Pupils will suggest one idea of their own and find other ideas by surveying the reports of other pupils. While surveying the reports, pupils will be asked to write comments in guestbooks of other pupils.
- As a follow-up to the unit, teachers may decide to have an Animal Action Day. Ideas for this can be found in the Teacher's Guide for Task 4.
