Teaching and Assessment Principles |
| This unit deals with raising pupils' awareness to endangered animals. In order to do this, pupils must first be encouraged to think about the concept of "empathy" for other living creatures. Since the outcome of the unit is for pupils to take some form of action on behalf of endangered animals, their sense of responsibility and autonomy should be developed. |
- Task encourages pupil autonomy.
|
Pre-Task:
The teacher should discuss the fact that, while feelings are real and can't be argued with, there are no "right" or "wrong" feelings. The teacher should work on two main ideas for this task:
- expressing feelings
- understanding and responding to other people's expressions of feelings - theconcept of "empathy".
|
- Pupils develop a positive self-image in the target language.
- Teachers activate and build on pupils' background knowledge.
|
| Pupils will read the story, "Yako in the Jungle". Teachers should encourage them to look for words that describe the feelings of the various characters in the story. |
- Pupils have opportunities to develop independent reading habits.
- Materials are compatible with pupils' level of proficiency.
|
Pupils will pretend to be one of the characters in the story:
Yako, Mother, a monkey, a deer, Kimba - King of the Beasts, a hunter, Gog - the Jungle Giant, the trees in the jungle.
Pupils express their understanding of the feelings of the characters in the story by assuming the role of one of those characters, and completing sentences about these characters.
Their work will be published in a Making Waves gallery. |
- Task provides opportunities for meaningful communication.
- Pupils analyse and reflect on their learning, interact, share information, exchange ideas and opinions and work together.
|
Post-Activity and Assessment:
The assessment for this task can be in the form of an oral post-activity in the classroom:
- The teacher divides pupils into small groups containing different characters that the pupils pretended to be while doing this task.
- Pupils can be given cards with vocabulary from this task to help them in this activity.
- Have pupils read their sentences to each other. They may respond to each other.
- Have the groups break up and then have class sit as a whole. Pupils have to report on one sentence that someone in his/her group said. For example, a pupil may report, "The monkey is sad because the hunter kills the animals."
- The teacher assesses pupils' performances on the task through this oral activity and also through checking the printed pages of sentences.
|
- Pupils analyse and reflect on their learning, interact, share information, exchange ideas and opinions and work together.
- Pupils are encouraged to experiment with their growing control of the language and are not afraid to make errors.
- Teachers create a supportive environment, one that allows pupils to take risks, to make errors and experiment with the language.
- Task encourages multiple modes of expression.
