Teaching and Assessment Principles |
| The goal of this task is for pupils to learn about animal habitats, families and dangers in order to understand the problems of endangered species, and in order to be able to search and read websites about endangered species. The task consists of three activities. The first activity relates to animal habitats, the second to animal families, and the third introduces the theme of endangered animals and the problems facing them. |
- Teachers stimulate pupils to broaden their horizons through the use of English.
|
Pre-Task:
- Each topic can be brainstormed or discussed in the classroom before pupils work on the computer.
- Animal Habitats activity: Pupils should be asked if they know the names of different animal habitats such as forests, jungles, ocean, mountains, and grasslands. Pupils should be made aware that in most cases, many different animals share the same habitat. At this stage, pupils may mention that some habitats are being destroyed. This information may be used in the third activity.
- Animal Families activity: Ask pupils if they know how animals are divided into families. Then introduce the six animal families: mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, fish and birds. Other vocabulary in the activity relates to the characteristics of these groups. Words that may be new to pupils are: blood, breathe, birth, nurse, fins, gills, skin, scales, oxygen, hatch.
- Endangered Species activity: Pupils may be asked to produce a list of the problems facing animals. The problems presented in this activity are:
- the use of pesticides
- the killing of animals for their fur or skin
- the capturing of animals for sale as pets
- the destruction of animal habitats (e.g. cutting down forests for trees and allowing the land to die, the cutting of forests for urban development)
- the introduction of predators into local animal habitats.
- All these problems are referred to and discussed in sites that pupils will visit to find information about the animals they choose to write about in Step 3.
|
- Materials enrich pupils' general knowledge.
- Materials serve as resources for projects.
- Materials stimulate pupils to seek further information.
|
In the computer room: There are three interactive tasks activities in this task. As they do these tasks, pupils will get immediate feedback if they are right or wrong. |
- Pupils have opportunities to learn by doing.
|
Animal Habitats activity:
This activity is a memory game. Pupils will see a memory game board. Half the square has names of habitats and the other half has pictures of those habitats. Pupils will need to find the hidden pairs, and match the habitat names to their pictures. |
- Pupils build on their prior language and world knowledge.
|
Animal Families activity: Pupils will see the names of the different animal families. When they click on the name of a family, a pop-up box will appear in which they will be able to read a description of the family. If they do not understand some of the words, pupils can use the dictionary and translate them.Under the families, there is a list of endangered animals. Next to each name is a drop down list with the names of the families. Pupils will need to choose the family that each animal belongs to. The animals introduced here are the same animals that appear in the next task. |
- Pupils build on their prior language and world knowledge.
|
Endangered Species activity: This is a simple matching activity. The activity starts with a short definition of endangered animals.Pupils will then see a set of pictures that illustrate the different problems facing endangered animals. Next to the pictures is a list of the problems facing the animals. Pupils will need to match the problem descriptions to the pictures. |
- Pupils can see the usefulness of what they are learning.
