Teaching and Assessment Principles |
| The goal of this task is to encourage pupils to think of ideas that can help save the endangered animal they chose. Many of the sites pupils have read include references to the way people can help endangered animals. Pupils should realize that taking action is a way of expressing care and concern. |
- Teachers stimulate pupils to broaden their horizons through the use of English.
- Pupils are aware of the learning objectives.
|
Pre-Task:
Teachers should encourage pupils to discuss what they have already learnt about endangered animals and ways people can help to save them. Pupils can suggest ways that they can help. Here are some ideas to get them thinking:
- Have pupils make buttons or badges with appropriate slogans.
- Have pupils prepare posters to display around school
- Have pupils prepare a petition and send it to the appropriate place
- Have pupils sign e-mail petitions on animal sites.
|
- Pupils have opportunities to learn by doing.
- Pupils are encouraged to use English outside the classroom.
- Teachers activate and build on pupils' prior knowledge.
|
In the Computer Room:
Pupils will look at other pupils' reports and see how these pupils suggested ways to help their animal. They should list all the ideas that they find. Ask pupils to write comments in the guestbooks of the reports they visit. Explain that it might be very exciting for other pupils to see that someone read their report! You can discuss what are appropriate comments to write in a guestbook. Pupils can be asked to suggest comments that they would like to see, and what they would not like to see in their own guestbooks. This might help making them become aware of how people will react to their comments. Some suitable comments might be:
- I really enjoyed reading you report.
- I liked the picture that you used.
- I like this animal as well.
- I would like to help this animal.
- Your report is very interesting.
|
- Pupils interact, share information, exchange ideas and opinions and work together.
|
| Pupils will then complete a form in which they will list their own ideas for helping animals, and the ideas that they found in other pupils' reports. They will send their ideas to the Take Action gallery on Making Waves. |
- Teachers allow pupils to make choices.
- Teachers encourage pupil autonomy.
|
| This unit can be summed up with a class presentation about endangered animals, and ideas for helping them. |
