Learning,
Teaching and Assessment Principles |
| There
should be a class discussion about local landmarks or favourite places.
It should be emphasized that this does NOT need to be an important or beautiful
building or statue. It might be a spot where everyone meets, a local park,
a playground, or a cafe?. Pupils should know that they are going to write
a web page about one of these places. |
- Pupils build on their prior language and world knowledge.
- Pupils are aware of the learning objectives.
- Teachers activate and build on pupils' background knowledge.
|
Pupils
will need to choose one of these places and either find a picture of it,
draw a picture, or take a photograph. This illustration will need to be
saved on a computer. This means that pupils (or teacher) will need to scan
the drawings. Another possibility is for pupils to draw pictures using MS
Paint. Pupils can use the following site to search for pictures. It has pictures
of every place and event in Israel.

- Pupils have opportunities to learn by doing.
- Teachers encourage pupil autonomy.
|
Pupils
will need to write a few sentences about the place. It could be a simple
description or an explanation of why the place was chosen, or why the place
is well known. Writing should be done in MS Word™ and saved.
Pupils should think of an attractive and meaningful title for their page. |
- Materials stimulate pupils to seek further information.
- Materials provide opportunities for contextual language
use and practice.
|
Pupils
will use a web page template into which they can copy and paste all their
work and upload the picture. Pupils will be able to print out their page
as well as seeing it displayed in the Landmarks Gallery.
Teachers can make a board display of pupils' work and pupils could be asked
to talk about the place that they chose. |
- Task gives a real world opportunity (or simulation)
to apply or adapt new knowledge.
|
| Pupils
should be encouraged to visit other local landmarks and write in other pupils'
guest books. Teachers can suggest suitable comments and questions for pupils
to write in guest books. |
- Pupils have the opportunity to choose texts and tasks
according to individual preferences.
|
Assessment:
The pupils will write open-ended answers to assess their performance at the end
of the unit.
