Task Description Pupils will find a recipe at an Internet recipe site for a traditional dish eaten by their own family. Pupils will submit this recipe to a database including information about the occasion at which this dish is eaten.
Desired Task Outcome Pupils will be able to find a recipe in an online recipe site and be able to submit their recipe to a recipe database.
Assessment Pupils will fill in an assessment rubric to assess their performance during the unit.

Task Stages

Pre-task: Pupils should be encouraged to discuss typical celebrations in their families.
They should think of types of celebrations and share information about their own family's traditions and cultures with the other pupils in the class. Similarities and differences between different cultures may be discussed.

Pre-task: Teachers should help pupils to jot down the names of dishes eaten by their families at celebrations.
  • The task stimulates pupils to broaden their horizons through the use of English.
Pupils will think of a typical celebration in their family. It may be a birthday or anniversary, or religious or traditional celebration. Pupils will choose a traditional dish eaten by their own family.

Pupils will access recipe sites in order to find a recipe for a traditional dish of their choice.
  • Pupils have opportunities to use the target language outside the classroom.

Pupils will submit this recipe to a database, including their own personal information and information about the occasion at which this dish is eaten.
  • Pupils use the language as a means for gaining information in other areas.
